The Tennessee Volunteers held firm in the college football playoff rankings on Tuesday, checking in at #7 in the new rankings after defeating the Mississippi State Bulldogs last Saturday 33-14 in Knoxville.

The Vols earned the 8 seed in the bracket, where they are projected to face 9 seed Notre Dame in Knoxville in the first round of the playoff.

Here is the full top 25 ranking:

  1. Oregon
  2. Ohio State
  3. Texas
  4. Penn State
  5. Indiana
  6. BYU
  7. Tennessee
  8. Notre Dame
  9. Miami
  10. Alabama
  11. Ole Miss
  12. Georgia
  13. Boise State
  14. SMU
  15. Texas A&M
  16. Kansas State
  17. Colorado
  18. Washington State
  19. Louisville
  20. Clemson
  21. South Carolina
  22. LSU
  23. Missouri
  24. Army
  25. Tulane

Tennessee held their spot at #7, but they were jumped by Indiana at 5 and BYU at 6. That Mississippi State win apparently didn’t impress the committee enough despite winning by a very similar score to Texas’ win over MSU (35-13) and by more points than Georgia prevailed (41-31). Meanwhile, BYU escaped 4-5 Utah 22-21 after a controversial penalty and last-minute drive by the Cougars to stay unbeaten.

The Vols matching up with Notre Dame would be an interesting clash of two teams who have produced some memorable contests over the years despite not playing all that often. The teams are tied 4-4 all time, with the last game coming in 2005, a 41-21 Notre Dame win in South Bend.

We’ll see where the Vols end up next week after Tennessee’s clash with Georgia in Athens. A win, and the Vols could find themselves bumped up into the top four, while things get nerve racking should they lose.
