Grizzlies’ Jahmai Mashack Turns Heads in NBA Summer League

July 16, 2025 by Last Word On College Basketball

Jahmai Mashack hasn’t  just shown up in the NBA Summer League—he has stood out.

The former Tennessee Volunteers guard delivered a complete performance for the Memphis Grizzlies in NBA Summer League action, finishing with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals, and a block in Tuesday’s outing. It was the kind of game that turns heads, not because of flashy dunks or highlight reels, but because of consistent, winning basketball on both ends of the court.

Tennessee guard Jahmai Mashack (15) walks off the court after a NCAA Tournament Elite Eight game between Tennessee and Houston at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., on Sunday, March 30, 2025.

Making a Statement in Summer League

Mashack is beginning to make waves in the pros the same way he did in college: with elite defense, unmatched effort, and rapidly improving offensive confidence.

Known for his grit at Tennessee, the 6-foot-4 guard once again showed he can impact every phase of the game. His disruptive play on defense forced turnovers, created transition opportunities, and flustered opponents from tip-off to the final buzzer. But it was his calm poise with the ball and aggressive scoring that signaled real growth. This wasn’t just hustle—it was polished execution.

Defensive DNA

At Tennessee, Mashack carved out a reputation as one of the best defenders in the nation. Routinely tasked with guarding the opponent’s top scorer, he thrived in high-pressure matchups. During his final season in Knoxville, he earned All-SEC Defensive Team honors, and was named a finalist for the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Award.

The Knoxville News Sentinel once described him as a “master at knowing an opponent’s strengths and weaknesses,” and his basketball IQ was on full display in Las Vegas. Whether it was jumping passing lanes, forcing steals, or locking up on the perimeter, Mashack did what few young players can do—control a game without needing the ball.

Offensive Growth on Display in NBA Summer League

While defense has always been Mashack’s calling card, his offensive arsenal is quickly expanding.

In Tuesday’s breakout performance, Mashack looked confident attacking the rim, finishing through contact, and hitting midrange shots. His ability to create plays off the dribble and dish to open teammates added a new layer to his game.

That versatility was evident in every possession, whether he was initiating offense or finishing it.

A Torchbearer Beyond Basketball at Tennessee

Mashack’s leadership doesn’t end with his on-court contributions.

In March 2025, he received the Torchbearer Award, the highest honor bestowed on a student at the University of Tennessee. It recognized not just athletic achievement, but leadership, academics, and service to the campus community. That same mindset now guides his professional aspirations.

Humble, driven, and team-focused, Mashack brings the kind of intangibles NBA teams value, especially for developmental and culture-building roles.

Fitting the Grizzlies’ Identity

The Memphis Grizzlies are in a period of transition, but their core identity—defense, toughness, and development—remains intact. In many ways, Mashack is a perfect fit.

His defensive skillset and unselfish mentality align well with the organization’s philosophy. Whether it’s on a two-way deal or as a training camp invite, Mashack is earning serious consideration. He’s not just auditioning—he’s building a résumé.

What’s Next?

With more NBA Summer League games on the horizon, Jahmai Mashack has a golden opportunity to solidify his status as an NBA-ready contributor. His two-way dominance, leadership pedigree, and visible growth make him one of the more intriguing prospects to watch.

From Rocky Top to the NBA hardwood, Mashack is proving he belongs. He’s not just making the leap—he’s making it count.
