After battling all the way back only to lose on a walk-off walk on Sunday, Tennessee is now faced with a do-or-die moment on Tuesday. Wake Forest stayed alive against the Volunteers yesterday, forcing a winner take all game seven in the Knoxville Regional.
A trip to the Super Regional round against Arkansas is on the line.
So now the question for Tennessee stands as this — who gets the ball with everything on the line? Liam Doyle and Marcus Phillips have already started this weekend and Tennessee burned through several bullpen arms on Sunday. Could they turn back to Doyle on Monday? Or go with the true fresh arm route?
“We haven’t talked about who would start, but there are some guys that are fresh [and that] makes you feel good about that,” Tony Vitello said on Sunday. “And then there are some guys that are very valuable pitchers and it’s up to them whether they want the ball or not. I already know one of them has been in my ear, but we’ll see whoever else wants to be involved. Whoever else not. I was a pitching coach before and some guys just flat out can’t do it. Some guys are excited to.”
Wake Forest will start Griffin Green, who holds a 2-1 record with a 2.55 ERA in 25 games this season. It will be his first start of the season.
