He’ll move to his third team in three years.
After hitting the transfer portal and flirting with coming back to Tennessee, Jakobe Thomas is now headed south to Miami. The veteran safety made his decision on Thursday night, choosing the Hurricanes after scheduling visits to both Miami and Florida State.

Thomas left Tennessee despite being in line to start this season. He was a part of a rotation last season, splitting time with Will Brooks and Andre Turrentine. The 6-2, 200 pound safety transferred to Tennessee last offseason, coming in from MTSU. A Tullahoma native, Thomas will now leave his home state to play for the Hurricanes.
Thomas totaled 22 tackles last season, credited with one sack, a forced fumble and two passes defensed.
Tennessee is left looking for veteran help in the secondary now, both at cornerback and safety. There’s still some uncertainty surrounding Jermod McCoy as he rehabs back from his ACL tear. The Volunteers would love some insurance there, and now they need to find a solution at safety with Thomas, John Slaughter and Christian Charles all now gone.
Tennessee has reportedly been in contact with South Florida cornerback Brent Austin and Colorado cornerback Colton Hood. We’ll see if they can get one of those over the finish line this weekend.
