Joe Joyce Enters Boxing’s World Heavyweight Title Frame

July 29, 2021 by The Sports Fan Journal Leave a Comment

‘Juggernaut’ Joe Joyce has now entered the mix at the top of the heavyweight division, following his victory against Carlos Takam. Now, Joyce is mandatory challenger for the WBO heavyweight title, and his sights are set on Anthony Joshua & Oleksandr Usyk.

At Wembley Arena in London last weekend, British heavyweight Joe Joyce went toe-to-toe with Cameroonian Carlos Takam. Despite struggling in the early rounds, the Juggernaut suddenly overwhelmed his opponent in the sixth to take the win.

The referee swiftly intervened after Joyce connected a combination of punches, and whilst Takam protested the stoppage, the British veteran walked away victorious. What does this mean for the heavyweight division?

Joyce Stuns Takam In Heavyweight Clash

It was a very one-sided start to the fight, and even Joe Joyce won’t deny that. With that said, Joyce took a number of strong punches delivered by Takam, and took them well. Whilst Takam won the first rounds of the fight, it was Joyce’s night.

In the fifth, Joyce seemed to find his range, and started to return some jabs of his own. Finding his feet, Joyce was able to quickly go on the attack and in the next round, the fight was over.

With a sharp counter from Joyce, a flurry of successful punches rocked Takam to the ropes, before the referee stepped in. Takam was furious with referee Steve Gray immediately after the fight was stopped, and claimed that it was premature. Arguably, Takam did have a case for himself, but ultimately it is the referee’s decision.

Joe Joyce – Mandatory Challenger

After the victory, Joyce was interviewed in the ring, and there’s no surprise that he’s coming for his well-deserved world title shot. Extending his unbeaten professional record to 13-0, Joyce is certainly backing himself.

Following the fight, Joyce said: “What I want is AJ or Usyk! I don’t need any more tests. I’ve started at the deep end and I’ve carried on at a steady trajectory”. When asked about Takam, Joyce was full of praise, and continued: “He’s a tough African lion so all credit to him. I had to take my opportunity when I saw it”.

The Heavyweight Division Picture

With AJ and Usyk battling at the end of September – less than two months away – it’s clear that Joyce has his eyes on that one. It’s also very likely that as mandatory challenger, Juggernaut will face the winner for the WBO title later down the line.

Meanwhile, current WBC champion Tyson Fury will complete his trilogy with ‘Bronze Bomber’ Deontay Wilder at the end of October. This was originally scheduled for August, but has now been pushed back to later in the year.
