Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello has been suspended for this weekend’s series against Dayton. The program confirmed this news on Friday afternoon.
Vitello and Tennessee are “working collaboratively” with the NCAA regarding a violation.
There have been some rumblings about Vitello potentially tampering with transfer shortstop Maui Ahuna.
Josh Elander will serve as Tennessee’s acting head coach during Vitello’s absence.
“Coach Vitello has acknowledged his mistake and accepted full responsibility,” the university said in a statement. “We appreciate his cooperation in the process and his dedication to do right by the student-athletes in the Tennessee baseball program. NCAA bylaws prohibit additional comment or details. The University will continue to emphasize – to all staff – the imperative of leading with honesty and integrity.”
Tennessee will provide an update on Vitello’s status on Monday, according to its statement.
The Volunteers entered this Friday’s game against the Flyers with a 3-2 record.
