Rece Davis: LSU Can't Get Into Playoff Over Tennessee

If the LSU Tigers win out and upset Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, it’s believed that they would be the first-ever two-loss team to make the College Football Playoff. But ESPN’s Rece Davis doesn’t believe LSU should get in over SEC rival Tennessee.

In a recent feature for College GameDay, Davis seemed to dismiss LSU as a CFP team over a one-loss Tennessee team. But he recently clarified that statement, asserting that while LSU can get in, they shouldn’t get in over Tennessee.

“Tennessee is and should be LSU’s ceiling,” Davis said. “If it’s a field goal game or a weird flukey thing and LSU wins, that doesn’t make it equal to what the other two did. So, what I said last night was LSU can get in, but not before Tennessee. And I’ll stick to the right now.”

That seems like a bit of a distinction without a difference though. It seems unlikely that Tennessee would ever get in over Georgia, so the Selection Committee would have to rank LSU behind both Tennessee and Georgia… but still somehow let them in?

It doesn’t make a ton of sense.

It’s definitely going to be hard to parse who the most deserving four teams to make the College Football Playoff are with the state of the standings right now.

We’ve got two undefeated teams, several more one-loss teams in line to win a conference title and an LSU team that’s done a total reversal from their season-opening loss to Florida State.

Ultimately, Rece Davis’ opinion won’t be the deciding factor on the issue.

But the College Football Playoff Selection Committee is going to have a tough time with this one. We don’t envy them.
