The teams are out.
The SEC announced All-Conference honors on Tuesday and six Tennessee Volunteers were named across the top three squads. No surprises here — James Pearce, Cooper Mays and Dylan Sampson made the first team All-SEC roster. Sampson was named twice, both as a running back and all-purpose player.
Cornerback Jermod McCoy was named to the second team, while kickoff specialist Josh Turbyville and offensive guard Javontez Spraggins made the third team.
Sampson is the first Volunteer to be named to the All-SEC first team since Travis Stephens in 2001. Sampson is still shattering school records, putting up the most yards (1,485), touchdowns (22) and points scored (132).
Longtime starter Cooper Mays was a big reason for Sampson’s success. He led a unit that led the SEC in rushing yards for the second consecutive season.
While James Pearce saw his sack production decrease, his pressure rate was still elite. Pearce led the SEC in pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. Massive, game-changing plays in the backfield were made against Oklahoma, Alabama and Florida to keep Tennessee’s season on track.
Jermod McCoy, Tennessee’s biggest pull out of the portal, was a difference maker from the moment he stepped foot on campus. He took Tennessee’s top cornerback role and ran with it, coming up with massive moments against Alabama, Oklahoma and Vanderbilt. Tennessee might not be in the College Football Playoff right now without his picks in crucial spots against the Crimson Tide and Commodores.
The SEC will release their Coach of the Year decision and all-freshman team later this week.
