Things have not been going well lately for the Tennessee Vols on the baseball diamond, and that continued over the weekend with another series loss clinched on Sunday, this time in a 7-5 loss to Vanderbilt to drop the series 2 to 1.
The Vols have now lost 5 of their last 6 series, with the only win coming last month at Ole Miss. The hard slide now has Tennessee down even further in Monday’s polls, as 17 in D1 Baseball and at 18 in Baseball America.

As the top 16 seeds get to host in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out where I’m going with this.
The Vols were listed as a projected 9 seed, with Vandy an 8, coming into the series, per the ESPN broadcast against the Commodores. However, that series loss likely puts the Dores in position for a top 8 seed and continues to send Tennessee down towards the 16/17 cut line for a hosting chance.
And things aren’t going to get any easier this weekend when the Vols travel to Arkansas to end the regular season. Another series loss there, and things truly do get dicey on the hosting front heading to Hoover for the SEC Tournament.
Tennessee can start to turn things around if they can get out of Fayetteville winning 2 of 3. That honestly ought to put them in a good spot. But does anyone here believe this team can win a weekend game right now where Liam Doyle isn’t pitching? Tough to see, particularly against one of the best teams in the country on the road.
We’ll find out this weekend if the Vols’ slide will end, or if it’s nail-biting time for Selection Monday.
