Moving on up.
It was another good Saturday for Tennessee football, though it didn’t start off too hot. The Volunteers dug out of an instant 14-0 hole against Vanderbilt in Nashville, dominating after that to win 36-23.
Tennessee had to take care of business to clinch a spot in the College Football Playoff, and they did just that. But now the possibility of hosting is very much on the table, thanks to losses from Miami and Ohio State. Both teams were stunned on Saturday, with the Buckeyes falling to a very mediocre Michigan team in Columbus and Miami falling on the road to Syracuse.
The result pushed both out of their conference title games. Miami is now in real danger of missing the playoff entirely, while Ohio State’s landing spot remains to be seen. Weighing out Tennessee vs. Ohio State might just determine a host site for the first round.
The AP and Coaches poll sides with Tennessee. The Volunteers jumped the Buckeyes to move up to No. 6 in both polls this afternoon. Ohio State landed at No. 7 in the AP and No. 8 in the coaches. Miami moved to No. 14 in both.
Elsewhere, Alabama and South Carolina made moves up the board. Those two teams might be the final at-large decision that the committed has to make next weekend.
