The Tennessee Volunteers remained just outside the top five of the both the AP and coaches polls after both were revealed on Sunday afternoon.
After dispatching with Kentucky 28-18 on Saturday night inside Neyland Stadium, the Vols moved up one spot in the coaches poll, rising from 7th to 6th. However, the Vols stayed at 7 in the AP Poll.

The Vols were close in the AP Poll, staying behind Penn State by just 8 points at 1158 to 1150. The Nittany Lions lost to Ohio State 20-13 at home, but that still wasn’t enough to drop them below Tennessee despite the lack of any type of quality win on their resume.
It was enough for the voting coaches to give Tennessee the nod for sixth place.
There was plenty of shakeup on Saturday. Besides Penn State’s loss, other teams in the top 11 to lose included Iowa State, Clemson, and Texas A&M. All lost to unranked teams. Iowa State lost in the final seconds to Texas Tech, Clemson lost convincingly to Louisville 33-21, and South Carolina blew the Aggies off the field 44-20.
Fortunately, the first College Football Playoff rankings will be released in just two days, which makes everything basically null. We’ll find out if the selection committee shares a similar view of the Vols that the media and coaches have had recently.
