Apparently all I needed to do was put up a post about where things stood on the transfer portal front for the Tennessee Volunteers. That jolted something new and big to happen on Sunday evening.
According to On3 Sports’ Pete Nakos, the Vols landed the commitment of Bowling Green catcher Garrett Wright in the transfer portal.

Go Vols 247 writer Ben McKee notes that Wright is being looked at for both outfield and catcher, which versatility isn’t a bad thing with the way the Vols struggled massively at the dish in the postseason from all three of their starting outfielders.
Wright, however, has very much not struggled at the plate in his two years at Bowling Green. He had a .406 batting average, the highest in the MAC and only one .400 or better. He had 8 home runs, 48 RBIs, a program-record 20 doubles, and an OPS of .1178. He was first-team All-MAC and the MAC defensive player of the year in 2025. That’ll play.
And about that defense, that fits like a glove with the Vols’ issues of controlling opposing runners last year. While a good bit of that blame fell on starting pitcher Marcus Phillips, an upgrade behind the plate at attacking those runners would be welcomed. It appears Wright could fit that bill.
Either in the outfield or behind the plate and undoubtedly at the dish with a bat in his hand, the Vols just got better on Sunday evening.
