Tennessee held on to the top spot in this week’s AP top 25 college basketball poll, edging out Auburn once again. The Volunteers received 1537 points and 50 first place votes, while Auburn received 1483 points and 12 first place votes.
Tennessee found a way on Saturday night with several players in big foul trouble. It was Jordan Gainey stealing the show, sprinting the length of the floor and hitting a game-winning layup as the clock struck zero. The Vols added another big road win against another quality opponent, and now focus begins to shift to SEC play. Tennessee will open with Arkansas on January 4th. Western Carolina, MTSU and Norfolk State remain on the non-conference slate.
The SEC now has five teams in the top seven — Tennessee, Auburn, Kentucky, Alabama and Florida. The conference is setting up to be a fist fight until the very end, and the top to bottom depth is going to challenge everyone every single night.
Elsewhere, Oregon has entered the top ten and UConn rebounded to No. 11 after a big win over Gonzaga. Texas A&M is back up to No. 12 and undefeated Oklahoma remains in the top 15. Chris Beard has Ole Miss in the top 20 with a 9-1 mark.
