Tennessee survived the Knoxville Regional on Monday night, taking care of Wake Forest in their second attempt. The Volunteers exploded for seven runs in the fourth inning, powered by home runs from Manny Marin and Andrew Fischer. The Volunteers would never look back, calling on ace Liam Doyle to shut things down in the final innings.
Tony Vitello’s group moves on to the Super Regional round for the fifth straight season. Standing in their way? Vitello’s old boss Dave Van Horn and the Arkansas Razorbacks. Vitello was an assistant at Arkansas from 2014-2017.
Arkansas beat Tennessee just a couple of weeks ago, taking games two and three from the Volunteers after dropping the first. The Volunteers will return to Fayetteville for another three-game series this weekend.
“The neighborhood I grew up in, it was still everybody meets out on the street and you play a bunch of games and whenever I lost—maybe my dad did it to me—I was kind of a little punk, but I always wanted to run it back,” Vitello said of getting another shot at Arkansas. “Let’s redo it.”
Tennessee and Arkansas won’t start until Saturday night in Fayetteville. The series, if needed, will run though Monday. The winner will be one of eight teams that will advance to Omaha for the College World Series. The Volunteers have made three of the last four College World Series fields and have seven all-time appearances.
