Well, that could have gone better.
The Tennessee Vols are now out of the SEC tournament after a 10-0 seventh inning run rule loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores in the day’s first semifinal.
Yeah. I don’t really want to get much into this one. Gross from the start. Tennessee their first two batters reach base on walks, then proceeded to strikeout six straight times in a row. Meanwhile, Vandy chased Tegan Kuhns in the second and built up a 7-0 lead by the third inning. That’s all, folks.
However, to a degree, Tennessee was playing a bit with house money. They came in needing to do some work to host, and I think they’ve done that. With a win over tourney-bound Alabama followed up by a gritty come from behind 7-5 win over the #1 team in the country in the Texas Longhorns, I feel pretty confident in saying the Vols will get to host a regional next weekend in Knoxville.
We’ll find out for sure this Monday – and no doubt, a win over Vandy would have lead-pipe locked Tennessee as a regional host, but the Vols and their fans should still leave Hoover feeling good about their chances of seeing Tennessee play baseball at Lindsey Nelson Stadium again this year.
