It seems not even Tennessee ace Liam Doyle can solve the Vols’ post-game-one blues.
The Arkansas Razorbacks lit up the Vols’ ace on Friday night in the second game of the series, and the Hogs would hold on to win 8-6 to even the series going into the schools’ regular season finale.
It was almost literally a hit or miss day for Doyle on the mound. He struck out 10, but he also allowed 11 hits across 4.2 innings that turned into 6 runs, including a pair of two-run home runs – one in the second and one in the third, which gave Arkansas a 5-4 lead they wouldn’t lose the rest of the game.
Down 8-4 in the seventh, the Vols fought back to make a game of it. Levi Clark lifted a ball to right that was originally ruled a double, but after review was reversed to a home run that video showed just reached the netting over the wall. That brought UT to within 8-6 with plenty of at bats left.
Unfortunately, that would spell the end of the offense for the night for the Tennessee Volunteers. Tennessee pushed in the eighth, but a double play ended the inning with two on base. Tennessee got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but a sliding catch by the Arkansas center fielder ended the game.
We’ll see on Saturday if Tennessee can dig deep and get a series win they desperately need to help boost their chances of hosting in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
