‘They are looking to get Vanderbilt basketball back to the top’: Derek Dixon recaps Vandy visit, gives decision timeline

Class of 2025 four-star point guard Derek Dixon has started his round of fall official visits after cutting his list to six schools with a trip to Vanderbilt this past weekend.

Dixon — the 6-foot-3, 190-pound guard from Gonzaga (D.C.) and the Team Takeover Nike EYBL AAU program — said he had a good visit.

“The facilities are nice and the coaching staff was great,” Dixon told ZAGSBLOG via text. “Their message was that I would have a good opportunity to play early in a system that fits me, and they are looking to get Vanderbilt basketball back to the top and think there is nothing stopping them from doing that, but they’ll need players like me to do it.”

Dixon is down to Arizona, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia and Vanderbilt. He has already seen Pittsburgh and Virginia officially (April 2024), as well as Syracuse (October 2023). Trips to North Carolina next weekend (Sept. 6) and Arizona (Sept. 13) are also set in stone.

Dixon told ZAGSBLOG he doesn’t plan on going back to any of his top schools and will make a decision at the end of the month after his two remaining officials.

“Sept. 27 is the date I was thinking,” Dixon said of a commitment timeline.

As for his game, Dixon has one of the purest looking jump shots in the 2025 class. He averaged 13.9 points, 3.4 assists and 2.1 rebounds at Peach Jam in seven games with Team Takeover. Dixon’s squad fell in the Peach semifinals and finished the summer with an overall record of 20-2.

Dixon is ranked the No. 58 overall prospect in the 2025 class by 247Sports and the No. 3 player from Washington, D.C.
