As the Colorado Avalanche look to maintain a Stanley Cup-contending team, a key defenceman is joining the team. Veteran Brent Burns is joining the Avs on a one-year contract.

Burns has played with the Carolina Hurricanes since being acquired by them before the 2022-23 season. In three seasons in Carolina, Burns scored 34 goals and recorded 99 points. Furthermore, in his first season with the Canes, Burns finished in the top ten in voting for the Norris Trophy.
Last season, Burns played in all 82 regular-season games. He scored six goals and added 23 assists. Furthermore, Burns played in all 15 postseason games for a Carolina team that reached the Eastern Conference Final.
Avs Add Key Piece
Burns joins a defensive core that includes Cale Makar. Burns provides an additional offensive-minded defenceman for the roster, which has the potential to increase the offence from an Avs team that usually does not have any trouble putting the puck in the back of the net.
Downsides to the Signing
Signing Burns certainly helps the Avalanche as they look to remain in contention. However, Burns is 40-years old. He scored six goals this past season and 10 goals the season before. Those were the lowest goal totals by Burns in an 82-game season since the 2009-10 season when Burns scored three goals in 47 games.
The Avalanche are certainly taking a gamble here. Father Time is undefeated and the evidence suggests he is making his way to Burns. Can the Avalanche win with Burns? They have only been to the second round once since winning the Stanley Cup in 2022. The window to winning is open and the Avs are not satisfied with just once championship.
