The Colorado Avalanche have signed star forward Martin Necas to an eight-year extension, with an $11.5 million average annual value. The new contract extension was first reported by Elliotte Friedman. The contract is $500K less annually than former Avalanche Mikko Rantanen signed for with the Dallas Stars.
The Colorado Avalanche and Martin Necas completed an 8-year, $11.5M contract extension. Another UFA off the board…front-loaded, $60M in signing bonuses, full NMC the first 7 years of the new deal.

The star forward has found his home in the NHL. This is after being acquired by the Avalanche in a blockbuster three-way trade that involved Mikko Rantanen heading to the Dallas Stars last season. Since then, Necas has been a perfect winger alongside Nathan MacKinnon on one of the strongest lines in the NHL. With the salary cap continuing to increase in the next few years, this contract has the potential to age very well for the Avalanche.
This season Necas is on pace for his best season in his career, currently set at 83 points. This move is also made with the intention of signing superstar defenceman Cale Makar. Makar is eligible for an extension on July 1st of 2026.
Necas Gets his Due
Martin Necas, who was drafted 12th overall in 2017, never found his fit in Carolina. Since his move he has been a perfect piece for the Avalanche, with a goals above expected rate of 3.3, and although it is early, is currently projected to score a career-high 52 goals this season.
The Avalanche have made it clear that within the eco-system of their internal salary cap management that they have to keep space available for Cale Makar, who is expected to get a significant pay rise as well from his $9 million contract set to expire after the 2026-27 season.
So far this season Martin Necas has seven goals and 13 points in 11 games in the early season. The Avalanche are expected to be contenders for the Stanley Cup for many years. Furthermore, they expect Necas to be a significant piece to the puzzle. They want to win another with this core group of players.
