NHL Rumour: Dallas Stars General Manager Wants Extension

June 11, 2023 by Last Word On Hockey

Jim Nill extension

It’s time once again for some more NHL rumours. We’re racing to the end of the 2022-23 NHL season, but there are plenty of rumours with the off-season looming. The Dallas Stars reached the Western Conference Final before losing to the Vegas Golden Knights. There were plenty of positives to take from the Stars season, but there is still a ways to go for the franchise. General manager Jim Nill had a strong draft class in 2017 and wants to stick around. Today’s NHL rumours surrounds a Jim Nill extension.

All NHL rumours come from the original source and are subject to change.

Jim Nill Seeks Extension From Dallas Stars

Rumour: Stars radio analyst Bruce LaVine talked to Nill about his GM’s future. Nill said that he would love to stay with the team beyond the end of his contract. The former NHL winger has one year left on his deal but wants to have some more time in the Lone Star State. LaVine was quick to add there’s no timeline for a discussion for talks to start.

Jim Nill on his future as General Manager:
“I’d like to be here a few more years”

No timeline for discussions with one year left on the current contract.

Nill did help draft one of the best classes in team history in 2017. That class has become the backbone of the team’s success. Players like Miro Heiskanen, Jake Oettinger and Jason Robertson came from that class.

Will Stars Sign Jim Nill Extension?

Nill has done some good things for the franchise, but there are still some issues. The Dallas GM has handed out plenty of no-trade clauses to players and that may make moving players harder to move. There is also the issue of some contracts that could become a burden on the salary cap.

Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin have been struggling in recent seasons and have large cap hits. Benn makes $9.5 million until the end of the 2024-25 season while Seguin will get $9.85 million until the end of the 2026-27 season. These cap hits are likely going to get in the way of re-signing some key players like Max Domi. Nill has been the architect of this current Dallas roster, but will he get to build it more after the end of next season?
