NHL Rumour: Free Agent Forwards Future In Montreal

June 9, 2023 by Last Word On Hockey

The offseason frenzy feels like Christmas morning. There is so much chaos going on. New teams are getting shiny new toys, while others may be getting lumps of coal. The buzz going around the league is in bunches. One team has made a move locking up a young piece. That team is the Montreal Canadiens. However, there is one free agent that may not get a contract. Today we focus on a Sean Monahan contract.

NHL Rumours: Monahan May Not Sign Contract in Montreal

Rumour: Chris Johnston briefly touches on the future of Sean Monahan

Chris Johnston with a brief update on Sean Monahan: “I don’t think it’s impossible he ends up back in Montreal… No guarantee he re-signs with the #Habs but I think there has been at least some discussions about that.” https://t.co/LsFJmW6ABn

A Sean Monahan contract is likely but might be with a different team. There may have been some discussions on the matter, but the future of the centre remains to be seen. After being a core piece of the Calgary Flames, he went on to be acquired by the Canadiens. Monahan was a premiere talent with the Flames. He went on to post three 60+ point seasons while also having a career year in 2018-19. However, injuries have bitten him and he has not been the same player since. Monahan has not hit the 30-point mark since 2019-20. Things did look bright for him in Montreal this season. Before a season-ending injury, he was near a point-per-game pace.

Why A Contract Makes Sense For Montreal

If you are Kent Hughes, a Sean Monahan contract does make sense. There was potential and fit for him on the team. He seemed to be rejuvenated playing under Martin St Louis. Monahan will not break the bank and you can sign him to a bridge deal. Worst-case scenario, he signs a one-year deal to see what he can do further while healthy. Monahan may not be the same calibre player he once was, but he serves as a good depth centre. Behind Nick Suzuki things are murky, which is why the latest buzz surrounds Pierre Luc Dubois.

If Monahan chooses not to sign, he will serve as a solid depth centre on any playoff-contending hockey team. He will not cost a lot given his production and injury history.
