NHL Rumour: Longtime Tampa Bay Forward Could Move On

June 7, 2023 by Last Word On Hockey

The offseason is in full swing. Only two teams remain in the quest to capture the Stanley Cup. Plenty of teams have made key decisions such as coaching hires, manager hires, and contract extensions. Free agency frenzy will be here before we know it. Today we focus on free agent Alex Killorn and the latest rumours about his future.

Alex Killorn And Tampa Could Part Ways

Rumour: Luke Fox from Sports Net talks about the future of Alex Killorn and Tampa Bay

Free agent Alex Killorn has been part of the Tampa Bay Lightning for the long haul. The man helped the club capture two Stanley Cups and has been an established piece to their group. However, the clock could be ticking on his time in Florida. With the salary cap being tight they have other pressing needs. If this is the end for Killorn in Tampa, it has been a fun ride.

The Future For Both Parties

The future of this team is bright. For the most part, the core group is locked up for the foreseeable future. Steven Stamkos has one year left, but that’s a conversation for next season. This is the last shot for Alex Killorn and a big payday. Given the other pressing needs, Killorn may not get a significant raise. Julien Brisebois had this to say on the matter, “It’s going to be a challenge,” Lightning GM Julien BriseBois said. “What helps us is that I know Alex loves it here. He wants to stay here. We’d love to have him here. He’s coming off a career season and means so much to our organization, both on the ice and off the ice.”

The feelings are mutual in terms of wanting to be part of things. Brisebois has already given extensions to Anthony Cirelli, Mikhail Sergachev, and Erik Cernak. Having to sign a goaltender to back up Andrei Vasilevskiy and having enough money may be hard to come by. Killorn was thrilled he was not taken in the Seattle Kraken expansion draft. But unless he takes a hometown discount, Killorn could be seen in a different sweater next season.
