Report: John Hynes Agrees To An Extension With The Nashville Predators

May 19, 2022 by Last Word On Hockey Leave a Comment

John Hynes extension

The Nashville Predators and head coach John Hynes have reportedly agreed to a multi-year contract extension, according to multiple sources. Hynes’ previous contract expires this year.

John Hynes’ expiring contract includes a one-year team option, but I am hearing that the Predators have signed Hynes to a new multi-year contract.

John Hynes And Predators Agree To Extension

Hynes, 47, will remain the coach of the Nashville Predators after replacing Peter Laviolette, who currently coaches the Washington Capitals. His first playoff experience was in the 2020 NHL playoffs, where they lost in round 1 to the Arizona Coyotes. Hynes has since coached the team to a 92-64-10 record over the last 3 years. The Predators just got off a first-round playoff loss, where they were swept by the Colorado Avalanche.

The contract Hynes previously had with the Predators, included a one-year option. Although the team opted to give him a multi-year extension instead, considering that they are in the back half of a rebuilding phase. They feel it will be better to stay with the same coach throughout the next three years than have a change behind the bench.

Hynes coached with the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, before getting a job with the New Jersey Devils. He was let go from the position before being hired by the Predators. He’s been with the team since the middle of the 2019-2020 season.

What This Means For The Predators

Considering the Predators aren’t in a position to compete, it makes sense to keep a coach around who succeeds in player development. Of course, there will be a concern as they push for contention down the road, but his contract will be up by the time that happens. Hynes could take the Predators on cup runs as Laviolette did with Nashville in 2017. For now, the biggest concern will be growing prospects and young players. Considering that they have lost in the first round for the past three seasons, this will be the furthest the Predators could go with this core.
