NCAA Football: Quick Lane Bowl-Pittsburgh vs Eastern Michigan

Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports

If your favorite NFL team is looking for a physical defensive back who can do it all, Eastern Michigan’s Vincent Calhoun checks every box.

A complete safety prospect that loves to deliver a big blow, Calhoun recently spoke exclusively with MCM about his experience at his Pro Day, what he loves about playing defensive back, and why an NFL team should give him a shot at the next level.

JM: How would you describe your play style?

VC: I’m a very physical safety first and foremost. I’m a big-time hitter. I love to hit. I can also cover. I played more in the box this season than usual. I’ve also played some free safety throughout my collegiate career. I’m very versatile. I’m experienced with doing a little bit of everything.

JM: What’s your favorite part about playing in the defensive backfield?

VC: I love the contact. I enjoy covering as well. I really like to cover because I enjoy proving that I can lock a guy down. That’s honestly what I love about that.

JM: Your Pro Day went down recently. Tell us about some of the results.

VC: I had a pretty solid Pro Day. I put up 25 reps on the bench press. I had a 34-inch vertical. I put up an official time of 4.46 in the 40-yard dash. That was a solid time for me. I ran a 4.3 in the short shuttle and jumped a 9’10” broad. I had some great results during the on-field workout portion as well.

JM: That’s awesome. Did you meet with any teams afterwards?

VC: Yeah, I met with a few teams in attendance. I spoke to the Browns, Colts, Cowboys, Falcons and Giants. We had some great conversations. I got some good feedback from those guys.

JM: That’s great. There seems to be a fair bit of interest in you. Who are some of the best wide receivers you’ve ever had to cover?

VC: Diontae Johnson from Toledo was a really good one. He ended up getting drafted in the third round last year. I also had to cover Corey Davis. I played against him during my true freshmen year. He’s with the Tennessee Titans now. He was right there with Johnson. Both of those guys are great players. I enjoyed competing against both of them. Those are the two guys that immediately come to mind.

JM: If there was one NFL quarterback you could intercept, who would it be and why?

VC: I would definitely go with Tom Brady. Everybody knows that’s the GOAT right there. I would love to play against him.

JM: How would you respond to a team or scout that may question the level of competition that you’ve gone up against?

VC: I would tell them to pull up the film from the big-time schools that we’ve played against. They’ll realize that my results remained consistent across the board. It’s not like I didn’t show up against the big teams. We played three Big 10 schools and I played well in all three of those games. I always rise to the occasion. I’m the same guy no matter what.

JM: That’s a great answer. I’ve appreciated your time today. In closing, why should a team give Vincent Calhoun a shot at the next level?

VC: I’m a guy that’s gonna come to work every day. I’m always trying to outwork everyone. I’m the type of guy that’s gonna have a positive impact on those around me. I’m not just trying to better myself, I’m trying to better everybody around me as well. My work ethic speaks for itself. I’m always trying to set a good example for my teammates. I’m all about lifting spirits and making sure we’re all working hard. I’m gonna push you to be better.
