Breaking down Ryan Tannehill’s contract with the Titans

NFL: Houston Texans at Tennessee Titans

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

Jeff Darlington has given us the numbers on the contract the Titans signed Ryan Tannehill to earlier today:

Ryan Tannehill has agreed to terms on a new four-year contract with the Titans, per source. Here’s the numbers:

$118m total
$29.5m average per year
$62m full guarantee
$91m total guarantee

BIG deal for Tannehill!

The quarterback market is just crazy. I’m not saying that Tannehill won’t live up to those numbers, but that is a lot of money based on what a guy did in just over 10 games.

What makes me feel good about it is that Jon Robinson knows him very well at this point. If he has the confidence in Tanehill to give him that money, then I will have the confidence that Tannehill can live up to it. It also means the Titans are going to do everything they can to build an offense tailored to what he does well….as they did last year down the stretch.

I am interested to see who they bring in to back him up. This deal means you aren’t drafting a quarterback early in this draft, so I would expect to see maybe a veteran and a late round pick.

[UPDATE]- Robinson did a fantastic job structuring this one:

Here’s more numbers on Ryan Tannehill’s deal, per source:

2020 is $17.5m fully guaranteed.

2021 is $24.5m fully guaranteed.

2022 is $29m guaranteed for injury at signing and fully guaranteed on 5th day of 2021 league year.

2023 is $27.5m base.

[UPDATE #2]- His cap number is just $22.5 in 2020:

Tannehill gets $62 million fully guaranteed at signing per source: $20 million signing bonus, $17.5 million base salary for 2020, $24.5 million base salary for 2021. All guaranteed.
