Browns and former Titans RT Jack Conklin agree to 3-year deal

March 16, 2020 by Titans Wire Leave a Comment

The Tennessee Titans have lost their starting right tackle in free agency, as the Cleveland Browns have agreed to a contract with Jack Conklin.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has the latest.

Jack Conklin agreed to a 3-year deal with the Browns for $42M with $30M fully guarantee, per @RosenhausSports. He earns $20mil in the first year. Wanted to keep it short due to the projected increases in the salary cap. Conklin will only be 28 when this deal expires.

This deal is less than what many had projected Conklin to get in free agency, at least in terms of overall value. Per Spotrac, his market value was estimated at a deal of six years and $90 million ($15 million annually), with some projecting him to possibly be the highest-paid offensive lineman.

While an argument could certainly be made against Conklin getting that kind of money, it was thought to be possible considering the demand for quality offensive linemen.

How Jack Conklin’s new deal with the @Browns stacks up to recent OT deals:

Jack Conklin – 3 years / $42 million ($14M AAV)
DJ Humphries – 3 years / $44.25 million ($14.58M AAV)
La’el Collins – 5 years / $50 million ($10M AAV)
Lane Johnson – 4 years / $72 million ($18M AAV)

However, it appears this was a strategic contract by Conklin with an eye on the future. The right tackle will now be able to cash in again in a few years when the salary cap is expected to increase significantly.

There will be plenty of critics out there questioning why the Titans weren’t willing to meet what seems like pretty reasonable demands in a contract. This deal is far from outrageous, at least after the first year. It’s possible the $20 million in the first year scared Tennessee away.

With Conklin gone, the Titans must now turn their attention to re-signing Dennis Kelly, who played well in Conklin’s absence in 2018. Kelly should come cheaper, which would free up more money for the Titans to spend.
