It’s been nearly 25 years since the Tennessee Titans rebranded from the Tennessee Oilers. This year the team intends to honor their former name with a special Oilers throwback day.
In a recent feature for the Titans website, senior writer Jim Wyatt answered a question from a fan named Trevor about the team’s plans for a throwback uniform. Wyatt said that the team intends to wear an Oilers uniform for one home game in 2023 – most likely against the Houston Texans since is would “make the most sense.”
“Hey Trevor. Oh man, what a rough game that was for the Titans! As for the Oilers throwbacks, nothing has changed from what I’ve said previously. The plan is to wear them for a home game in 2023. The exact game is still TBD, but I’ve already said I suspect it will be for the game vs the Texans. Wouldn’t that make the most sense?” Wyatt wrote.
Titans fans are pumped to see their team in a throwback uniform this year. Many are hopeful that the team will have star running back Derrick Henry wearing it to run all over the Texans:
“If I don’t get to see Derrick Henry wearing a Houston Oilers throwback while running for 200 yards on the Texans because the Titans decided to trade him I will not be happy,” one user replied.
“If they don’t wear them when they host Houston, why would they even bother LOL,” wrote another.
“The Titans need to show everyone who the rightful owners of the Oilers brand are, and what better way to prove that point than wearing their glorious Oilers throwbacks against the Houston Texans,” a third wrote.
“Please let it be against the Texans. This has been my dream for a decade. Manifesting this,” replied a fourth.
The Titans relocated the franchise from Houston in 1997 after calling it home since their founding as an AFL team in 1960. But it only took about five years for the NFL to bring the NFL back to the city of Houston with the Texans as an expansion team in 2002.
Their first year as the Titans was arguably their best ever. They won the 1999 AFC Championship Game to reach their first-ever Super Bowl, but came up short against the Rams in Super Bowl XXXIV.
Since the, the Titans have reached the AFC Championship Game two more times.
Will the Titans win their throwback game as the “Oilers?”
