Overpaying for J.J. Watt named the one move Titans need to avoid

February 20, 2021 by Titans Wire Leave a Comment

The Tennessee Titans desperately need to upgrade their pass rush in a big way if this team wants to take that next step to a Super Bowl in 2021.

Tennessee can’t be so desperate that it overpays for any particular player, though, and that’s especially true with the Titans having limited funds to spare.

And Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox agrees, at least in regard to J.J. Watt. He believes overpaying for Watt is the one move the Titans can’t make this offseason. Here’s what Knox had to say:

However, Tennessee needs to avoid overpaying to land Watt. He has a notable injury history—he’s missed 32 games over the past five seasons—and the Titans are projected to have less than $1 million in cap space.

Last offseason, the Titans took a gamble on another oft-injured pass-rusher, Jadeveon Clowney. They shelled out $13 million for a one-year deal but got just eight games and zero sacks in return.

Watt represents the sort of risk that the Titans cannot take for a second consecutive offseason.

The Titans’ interest in Watt has been confirmed by both general manager Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Vrabel, so it appears Tennessee is at least taking a stab at landing the future Hall of Famer.

While Watt would provide an upgrade for the Titans’ pass rush, he does come with some risk, as Knox pointed out. Watt has missed significant time the past five seasons and isn’t the same 20-sack monster he was years ago.

The Titans can’t break the bank for Watt. Ideally, he’d be just one of multiple moves Robinson makes to improve the pass rush, and defense overall, this offseason.
