Ravens, Panthers May Sign Steelers Cut Safety

The Ravens, Panthers may sign Steelers cut safety Terrell Edmunds off waivers this season. According to reports, the Steelers are moving on from the veteran after his second stint with the team that didn’t last a full season. Edmunds was on the Jaguars practice squad before signing on the Pittsburgh 53-man roster. The release makes room for two players, Tyler Matakevich and Ben Skowronek but, surprisingly, they cut Edmunds so he should be back on the practice squad if a team doesn’t claim him.

However, Edmunds was on the injury report this week so the Steelers didn’t want to waste any time with that. Originally selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, the Virginia Tech product was a viable threat in the secondary eventually filling in for Morgan Burnett after successfully earning the first-team reps. In 2019, he remained consistent with the team after recording 105 tackles, two for loss and 3 passes defended. However, his value was decreasing since the Steelers didn’t want to pick up his fifth-year option in 2021 but stayed in Pittsburgh until 2023.

Edmunds was a journeyman from the Eagles, Titans and Jaguars and now he’s available on the free-agent market. After totaling 417 tackles, five sacks and five interceptions, he may have some gas in the tank to help for a depth role. He may not be a starter anymore in this league but his veteran presence may be what teams are looking for to build their secondary room.

More Defensive Power

The Baltimore Ravens have one of the best offenses yet in the last decade after signing Derrick Henry this offseason. They finally addressed the wide receiver position since trading for Diontae Johnson to accommodate Nelson Agholor in a depth role. Lamar Jackson may handsomely have solid two-set weapons with Zay Flowers and Rashod, but they still have some retooling to undergo in their secondary game. After a narrow win against the Bengals, the Ravens allowed Joe Burrow to score 34 points accumulating 428 yards and four touchdowns.

Kyle Hamilton is still their top dependable option but someone like Edmunds could be a temporary veteran solution to give some relief. Edmunds doesn’t need to be full-time but Marcus Williams hasn’t been consistent this year and Eddie Jackson is more of a rotational piece. Perhaps, he could be a financial rental help for the entire Ravens secondary to give Hamilton time to recover from his injury. With Cameron Sutton returning to the lineup in Pittsburgh, Edmunds could benefit from playing for a roster like the Ravens who have all the right pieces to lead them to a ring before he retires.

Building for the Future

The Carolina Panthers 2024 season may be over but it doesn’t mean they can’t start building for the next several years. They were hoping to be a competitive team this year but the offense has been faltering since benching Bryce Young in favor of bridge quarterback Andy Dalton. Dave Canales didn’t do much to bring help to the secondary room other than signing a few practice squad reserves. This wasn’t efficient in helping Jaycee Horn have a successful year on the field alongside Xavier Woods.

The Panthers won’t lose anything if they decide to bank on someone like Edmunds for a temporary role. He’ll probably need to earn a new contract but he would easily be a starter alongside Woods if he can wipe off the 2019 dust.
