Re-signing Jayon Brown named Titans' smartest offseason move so far

March 28, 2021 by Titans Wire Leave a Comment

The Tennessee Titans hit a home run when they were able to re-sign inside linebacker Jayon Brown to a one-year, $5.3 million deal this offseason.

The overwhelming thought was that the Titans wouldn’t be able to afford him, as it was figured Brown, who is one of the better coverage linebackers in the NFL, could make upwards of $10 or $11 million annually.

However, that was not the case for whatever reason — perhaps his injury-shortened 2020 campaign had something to do with it — and instead Tennessee was able to retain Brown on the cheap.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox believes the move to bring Brown back to Nashville is the Titans’ smartest offseason move thus far:

Since being taken in the fifth round of the 2017 draft, Brown has been one of Tennessee’s most versatile second-level defenders. His new deal will ensure that he sticks around for at least another season at a relative bargain.

The 26-year-old will cost the Titans a modest $5.3 million for the 2021 season.

While the ability to retain Brown at that price likely fell into the Titans’ lap, it was absolutely a no-brainer once it became a reality. Now, the Titans keep a key part of their defense and won’t have another hole to fill going into 2021.

As far as smart decisions go, the only move that rivals the Brown re-signing was the addition of Denico Autry, who gives Tennessee a much-needed upgrade upfront and comes at a reasonable price.

While signing Bud Dupree was a necessity, it’s hard to call it the smartest move given the lucrative deal he received and the risk that comes with it.
