General Manager Mike Borgonzi executed a bit of business on the eve of the Tennessee Titans’ showdown with the Denver Broncos. News broke on Saturday morning that the Titans and star safety Amani Hooker agreed to a contract extension that keeps him in Nashville for a while. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported the news of the extension today. The team confirmed the signing shortly thereafter with the usual pomp and circumstance.

Report: Tennessee Titans Agree To Extension With Star Safety
Hooker enters his seventh season with the team after playing collegiately at perennial defensive power Iowa. The Titans selected the star safety in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft and haven’t looked back. To date, he has logged 335 combined tackles, 12 interceptions, 31 PBUs, and five forced fumbles.

What does this mean for Hooker?
The extension locks him up with the Titans until the 2029 season, which takes him to his age-31 season. Before the extension news was released to the world, Hooker was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after the 2025 season. The deal provides him with security in an exploding market for safety contracts. Obviously, the extension puts any trade speculation to rest. He’s sporting a new haircut as he enters a new tax bracket with his contract. Hooker enters the top 15 salary market for the position with an AAV of $14 million. According to PFF, Hooker finished with a coverage grade of 70.3, which was 24th best out of 96 graded safeties. He completed the season with an overall grade of 68.0, which ranked 33rd overall in the safety group. Veteran safety Quandre Diggs was miffed in the offseason as to why Hooker wasn’t receiving any love from the media.

What does this mean for the Titans?
According to OverTheCap, the Titans entered Saturday with the eighth-most cap space in the league with a shade under $20 million. The contract does minor damage to their cap room in 2026, where they are projected to have the most cap space in the entire NFL with $105 million. While the safety position for the Titans has been a rotating cast of characters around Hooker, it settles them down at one spot. Free agent acquisition Xavier Woods is projected to be the free safety. DC Dennard Wilson loves to play multiple safety sets, so there could be mixing and matching going on. The deal gives peace of mind to both the player and the team with so many critical 2026 roster decisions.
Who could be next to extend?
Hooker’s secondary mate, cornerback Roger McCreary, needs a new contract and is one of the underrated slot corners in the league. Long snapper Morgan Cox is another player worth extending, but he’s on a year-to-year contract at this point. While EDGE Arden Key hasn’t been as effective as hoped under his onerous contract, he enters 2025 looking for a new deal. Tight end Chig Okonkwo will need to perform well to earn a second contract. The roster will undergo some changes as the new GM takes stock of the team. Who will be a Tennessee Titan beyond the 2026 campaign?
