Request Granted: Tanking Titans Cut All-Pro; 3 Suitors Emerge

October 22, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

After requesting his release from the Tennessee Titans, the team will move on and cut veteran wide receiver Tyler Lockett. According to the breaking news, Lockett had no desire to stay in Tennessee anymore, and as of this posting, the wide receiver is expected to become available tomorrow to sign anywhere he wants. Originally selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft, the former Kansas State product wasn’t a major viable option for rookie Cam Ward’s offense. However, the Titans still took a chance on him, and now, after the release, it makes sense why he wanted out of Tennessee.

The team is nowhere near being a postseason contender, especially after firing Brian Callahan. Lockett isn’t the most exciting receiver, and he probably won’t get starting duties elsewhere unless a team is in dire need of a wideout. It’s hard to imagine that he won’t be in a new uniform this week, as several teams could use his services, especially when it comes to playoff time. Lockett leads the Seattle Seahawks as the No. 2 receiver of all-time in leading yards, catching 661 passes for 8,594 yards and 61 touchdowns.

Unfortunately, those days are behind him. His production is starting to take a huge decline, but these three teams could easily put him back in the rhythm and potentially turn him into a hot weapon again.

Potential Fits

Pittsburgh Steelers

Since the start of the 2025 offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers have been building one of the oldest offensive rosters in the league. After trading for DK Metcalf earlier, this would be the most logical signing for the Steelers to pair Lockett and reunite in Pittsburgh. The potential duo could exceed expectations once again and Aaron Rodgers would be reaping the benefits of it. Lockett isn’t the same player he once was, but when you load him up with Rodgers and Metcalf in the same roster, he could do some serious damage to opposing secondaries if they give him the right opportunities.

It’s hard to predict what the Steelers will do here since they need a No. 2 receiver. It doesn’t mean Roman Wilson and Calvin Austin aren’t capable, but after releasing Robert Woods earlier this season, there is a huge need.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the perfect team to shed success of this offense that would include Lockett in the mix. After losing Mike Evans for the rest of the 2025 campaign, Lockett isn’t the most viable replacement, but he could keep this offense intact for a team that needs receiver help. Rookie Emeka Egbuka is on fire, and that is something that they can’t risk giving up if they’re lacking talent in their receiving corps.

This does not mean Tex Johnson and Sterling Shephard are anything less, but if you have NFC Championship aspirations, Lockett might be the guy to help Baker Mayfield.

New England Patriots

After picking up a win over the Titans, it wouldn’t be surprising to see head coach Mike Vrabel go old-school here. The Patriots’ receiving corps isn’t the worst, but there is always room for improvement, and Lockett could excel as a reliable route-runner in the middle. Stefon Diggs and Kayshon Boutte are emerging as the top two of this unit, and Lockett coming in as the third to help Mack Hollins and DeMario Douglas might help Drake Maye.
