Titans' Darrynton Evans 'benefitting greatly' from extra practice reps

August 7, 2021 by Titans Wire Leave a Comment

With Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry seeing limited reps in practice and doing most of his work off to the side, 2020 third-round pick, running back Darrynton Evans, has seen extra work during training camp.

Evans, who is entering his second year in the NFL, is looking to claim the work behind Tennessee’s workhorse back after a rookie campaign in which he played in just five games due to injury.

Titans running backs coach, Tony Dews, says Evans is “benefitting greatly” from the extra work, which is especially important after the Appalachian State product saw an abbreviated offseason due to COVID-19.

“As you know, repetition is the mother of all learning, right? So, he’s benefitting greatly from taking a lot of these reps and getting to play with that first group of offensive linemen. Kind of starting to develop some of that that continuity with them and understand how they see things, and how they block things, and being able to communicate with the centers and the protection part of it. So, it’s been really, really good, and then going back to the way the offseason went last year with all the COVID stuff where he missed all those reps as a rookie, so obviously it has been really good to get him out there and hopefully we can continue to make up ground from that standpoint.”

Evans is one of three backs we believe are locks to make the roster, along with Henry and fullback Khari Blasingame. If the Titans do carry a fourth, Brian Hill is our favorite to land the spot.

If all goes well ahead of the 2021 campaign, expect to see Evans get some of Henry’s scraps as far as carries are concerned, but he’ll primarily be used in the passing game, where he could be split out as a receiver in some cases.
