After an offseason in which the Tennessee Titans had to be frugal in free agency due to their lack of cap space, the team is now flush with money to spend during the 2024 offseason.
As things stand now, the Titans are set to have $78.5 million in cap space this offseason, the most in the NFL — and bear in mind, that’s before Tennessee makes any roster cuts that would free up more money.
There has been a debate about how much of that money the Titans should end up spending considering the free-agent class isn’t exactly loaded with surefire talent.
When asked about Tennessee’s cash flow, Carthon made it clear the team will spend but will do so “wisely” while also exercising patience because of the potential for more players to become available later in the offseason, like DeAndre Hopkins did in 2023.
“It’s a lot of cap space,” Carthon said, per Jim Wyatt. “But we have to spend wisely. We don’t want to just load up and spend money.
“Again, we are trying to build a long-term, consistent thing, and you can’t do that spending all $90 million out front. We have to be patient, and we have to position ourselves, (knowing) there are going to be guys that come free in June and July, like when we got D-Hop, that we have to have the space for and be able to afford it.”
“We plan to be active,” Carthon added, “but we are going to be patient and let everything come to us.”
However the Titans decide to spend their money, they have to make sure, at the very least, that they do enough to put Will Levis in a better position to succeed.
They won’t be able to accomplish that feat through the draft alone.
