Titans' Marcus Johnson addresses his standout training camp

August 12, 2021 by Titans Wire Leave a Comment

If you go back through all 12 of our training camp practice recaps, chances are you’ll find positives notes about Tennessee Titans wide receiver Marcus Johnson in most, if not all of them.

Johnson hasn’t been just one of the biggest standouts in training camp among the wide receivers and offensive players, he has arguably impressed more than any player on the entire roster.

And his performance has caught the eye of his coaches, as he has received praise from offensive coordinator Todd Downing and head coach Mike Vrabel, both of whom have pointed to Johnson as a model of consistency.

“I think Marcus has been an example of someone who has taken advantage of his opportunities to go out there and get some runs with the ones,” Downing said. “And I think he’s really done a nice job of kind of playing it out and being consistent, both at X and Z out on the perimeter.”

Mike Vrabel said #Titans WR Marcus Johnson is a good example of a guy being a model of someone who has taken advantage of extra reps by doing well and not making same mistake twice.

While it’s hard to imagine Johnson not making the 53-man roster at this point, he knows full well that he has to keep showing out in order to really secure his spot.

“I’m happy with what I’ve done, but obviously it’s so early that you can’t go off of any of it, you’ve got to keep stacking (good days),” Johnson said, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online.

Before showing out in camp, Johnson was considered an underdog to make the roster, and that was especially true after the Titans traded for Julio Jones, which left one less spot on the wide receiver depth chart.

But being the underdog and still making a roster is nothing new for Johnson, who overcame a similar situation while with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017, the same season in which the team won the Super Bowl.

“Now, once Julio came in and everything, I’ve been in similar situations,” Johnson said. “My second year in Philadelphia, we brought in Alshon (Jeffery), Torrey Smith, and then we drafted two guys, and I’m an undrafted second-year player coming from practice squad. By the grace of God made the roster that year, we did some great things, so, I know what adversity looks like, I know this league, I know myself and what I can bring. It brings the best out of me.”

Johnson’s next chance to further prove he belongs will come on Friday night, when the Titans open their preseason in Atlanta against the Falcons.
