Titans Released Veteran Quarterback On Wednesday

Matt Barkley is going to look for his eighth NFL franchise as we approach Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season. After signing with the Tennessee Titans this offseason, he has now been released.

Barkley signed a two-year deal with the team on Aug. 5. He was set to make over $1 million this fall.

The timing of this decision is a bit surprising. The team is currently without starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who hit the Reserve/COVID-19 List last week. With his absence, and Barkley being cut, second-year quarterback Logan Woodside is now the only healthy quarterback on the roster. That indicates that the team is not worried about Tannehill’s long term status after this COVID-19 stint.

Barkley, who began his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, appeared in five games for the Buffalo Bills in 2020. For his career, he has 2,699 passing yards on a 58.4-percent completion rate, with 11 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

Barkley split reps with Woodside through three preseason games. He went 24-for-39 for 295 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.

The Eagles made Barkley a fourth-round pick in 2013. After two years with the franchise, he’s had stints with the Arizona Cardinals (2015, 2017), Chicago Bears (2016), San Francisco 49ers (2017), and Cincinnati Bengals (2018), before landing with the Bills in 2018, where he primarily backed up Josh Allen.

He has a fair amount of experience, but turnovers and a lack of accuracy have plagued him throughout his NFL career. We’ll see if he lands another opportunity in the coming days here. The NFL season kicks off with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Dallas Cowboys next Thursday, while Sunday, Sept. 12 is the first full day of football this year.

The Tennessee Titans, meanwhile, open at home against the Arizona Cardinals at 1 p.m. on that Sunday.
