Titans sign QB Matt Barkley, OL Brent Qvale among slew of roster moves

August 5, 2021 by Titans Wire Leave a Comment

The Tennessee Titans have made a flurry of roster moves on Thursday as the team enjoys an off day during training camp.

According to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online, Tennessee has signed quarterback Matt Barkley and released signal-caller DeShone Kizer. Barkley announced earlier in the day that he had signed with the Titans.

Adding to those moves, the Titans have also inked offensive linemen Brent Qvale and Ross Reynolds, tight end Donnie Ernsberger, and placed center Spencer Pulley and defensive back Greg Mabin on Injured Reserve.

Qvale, a six-year veteran out of Nebraska, has spent time with the New York Jets and Houston Texans, playing in 77 games (18 starts) over the course of his career. In 2020, he appeared in 14 games (three starts) with the Texans.

Qvale offers versatility, as he can play at both guard and tackle. He’ll factor into the depth competition upfront for Tennessee. Reynolds, a guard, has never played in a regular-season contest in the NFL.

Barkley brings plenty of NFL experience to the backup competition, as he’s spent six seasons in the league since being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL draft.

The veteran quarterback has appeared in 19 games (seven starts) during his career and was Josh Allen’s backup with the Buffalo Bills the past three seasons. He has thrown for 2,699 yards and 11 touchdowns to 22 interceptions, while completing 58.4 percent of his passes.

The move to swap out Kizer for Barkley doesn’t come as much of a surprise, as neither he nor Logan Woodside have had a good camp. Barkley has a great shot to beat out Woodside for the backup role.
